RENTING WITH YOUR PIT BULL

Your dog is part of your family – and it’s important to keep your family together! We’ve compiled a list of pet-friendly CNY properties. Please contact us if you know of another property to add to our list!

IN PERSON WHEN POSSIBLE!

We have found success with pit bull owners who have brought their dogs with them to meet the landlords or property managers. It’s easy for landlords to say no over the phone, but once they meet your well-behaved pit bull – they may be more open. Be professional, polite, and calm when asking about the property’s pet policy.

GET RENTER’S INSURANCE

Property managers are concerned about liability. If you can secure renter’s insurance that covers your pit bull (see below) then you’ll be more apt to get a “yes”!

PREPARING FOR A MEETING WITH THE LANDLORD

  1. Take your dog for a long walk so that he’s calm and composed for the meeting.
  2. Show the property manager that your dog knows basic commands and has been through a training class. If you have the training class certificate, bring it.
  3. Emphasize that you always keep your dog on a leash, clean up waste, and are a responsible pet owner.
  4. Bring along a recommendation from a veterinary practice who has worked with your dog and can vouch for his/her behavior.

ACQUIRING INSURANCE WITH YOUR PIT BULL

Whether it’s renter’s insurance or homeowner’s insurance, unfortunately many companies discriminate based upon breed. However, we’ve done some research to find pit bull-friendly companies that are open to covering pit bull type dogs. Contact us if you have another company to add to our list.
